My name is BJ. I’m an alcoholic and drug addict. I have currently been clean for 1 year, 6 months, 28 days. Like most people, I had a heavy drinking and drug problem. One day I decided it was time for me to get help. In doing so I started getting help by going to the VA Hospital, they in turn sent me out to a drug rehabilitation center. I was there for approximately two and a half months. Then they transferred me to a place called Gateway, due to the fact that I was a homeless veteran. While at Gateway, they sent me to DeKalb Addiction Clinic. DAC taught me how to handle triggers and how to learn to not want to drink. I also learned coping skills for getting back into society as a productive individual.
Since that time I have been clean over a year or so now. I am now currently attending college and will be graduating in the next two to three months. I have a bachelor’s degree in music, and I will be getting an associates degree in graphic design. I’ve also been offered a tenure at a very prestigious photography college in Massachussets. Due to the fact that I’ve gotten off drugs, I have my own place, I have my own car and I’m in the process of looking to buy my own home here soon.
I also learned how to reach out to people when you need a hand. You’ve got to throw all your doubts and fears away and just not be afraid to say, ‘I need help.’ I wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t asked for it that day. I learned the true meaning of what it is to be a productive individual. Now I want give back and help others to get where I’ve already gotten.
